Lorie Bickford, owner and principal instructor at JoyRide, can remember every bike she has ever owned and loved. She has always been active, whether it is, outdoor cycling, hiking, x-country skiing, even competitive badminton. In 1998, Lorie discovered indoor cycling as an effective and fun way to stay in shape for all the activities she enjoys and she has been hooked ever since.
Lorie’s classes are known for being upbeat and non-competitive, but always individually challenging. Her greatest satisfaction is to see individuals set and meet their personal goals, while having fun along the way! As for music, whatever sets the tone for the ride is fair game. She is fortunate to have Jeff’s vast musical library from which to choose motivating and upbeat music to match her teaching style! In addition to being a Schwinn Certified Cycling Coach, she is certified in SPINNING®, by Madd Dogg Athletics and Group Power Weight training classes by Body Training Systems.
Outside the cycling studio Lorie enjoys traveling with her partner and husband, Jeff; being a proud Oregon State Beaver mom; and facilitating courses for Chemeketa Community College’s MERIT Micro-enterprise and Customized Training Programs. She is bilingual in English/Spanish so: Sí, Se Habla Epañol en JoyRide!

Jeff Bickford is a certified Schwinn Indoor Cycling Coach and has enjoyed both indoor and outdoor cycling for many years. Besides making sure everyone gets the workout they came for, he believes that given the right atmosphere even the most challenging workout can also be fun.
The “fun atmosphere” found in Jeff’s classes comes from his obvious love and attention to the music he chooses for his rides. While Jeff’s musical preferences lean towards classic and contemporary rock and pop, he enjoys “mixing it up” so you are guaranteed to hear some interesting surprises as well! Watch for the occasional “theme ride”.
Jeff has lived in Salem, with his wife, and other half of the JoyRide “tandem team”, Lorie, since 1990, however he grew up in the Sacramento area, and graduated from the University of California at Davis. When he’s not teaching here at JoyRide, he enjoys hiking, cheering on the Beavers, and he’s an unabashed golf addict (single digit handicap, no less) Jeff’s “day job” is managing Marion County’s Environmental Services Division which oversee’s the county’s parks and recycling programs. You’ll see his influence in the sustainable practices JoyRide has incorporated into its daily routines.

Bridget Weldon-Ott, known to most people in the Salem-Keizer cycling world, as “BREW” rode her first bike at the age of 2, and has been obsessed with riding bikes as well as all other outdoor recreational activities every since! She has been a group fitness instructor since 2003, the same year in which she received her initial SPINNING® certification, from Madd Dogg Athletics.
Participants of Brew’s cycle classes describe her class as: accessible, energizing, and definitely upbeat like her personality. From time to time they may be even caught saying that “Brew” is actually short for “Brutal”/Challenging workouts, but they qualify that with “in a good way, of course!”
She enjoys riding to all genres of music, and her library of music stretches over 5 decades. Yes, she even sweats to the oldies! Don’t be fooled though, modern Top 40 is almost always in the mix as well. Brew likes to include a variety of genres in each playlist and has been known to seek out requests from members to incorporate into both interval and strength rides.
A teacher/education coach by day, this loyal Beavers’ (OSU) and Wolves’ (WOU) fan is obsessed with teaching & learning as well as spending time with family and friends! When not at school or working out, this 30…….something can often be found taking in a live sporting event with her husband, admiring classic cars, or researching the latest and greatest educational practices! Bridget also has experience teaching Body Strength and Abs fitness classes, as well as in coaching middle school athletics. As our “dark thirty” 5 am teacher, her enthusiasm and energy are contagious and will help you get rolling into your day.

Karen Gehrt-Salem has enjoyed outdoor activities since she was a little girl in Toronto, Canada. Raised in Southern California she enjoyed surfing, para sailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, horseback riding, and of course, cycling. She taught her first group fitness class at the age of 19 and since that time her love for teaching has grown and indoor cycling has become a passion. She holds a SPINNING® certification from Madd Athletics and recently completed the Schwinn Cycle Coach training offered at JoyRide.
Karen’s classes have a unique style of visual imagery and motivational coaching to keep you driving yourself across varied roads and terrains. Her love for music is reflected in the diverse sounds you’ll hear in her classes including R&B, rock, techno, top 40, songs from Cirque du Soleil and beats.
During the day Karen operates a Mobile Home Park full of Salem seniors, creating a social club network which encourages them to interact with their peers in the community. During the holidays she volunteers with food preparation and donates turkeys and hams for the community to enjoy. In addition to teaching cycling, she stays busy teaching other group fitness classes at several area gyms.

By day, mostly sitting behind a desk, Mary Bauman works for the Oregon Judicial Dept. as Editor of the Oregon Reports and as manager of the Publications Section. After work and on weekends, however, she unleashes that pent-up energy on an unsuspecting public in her various fitness classes. She has been an AFAA certified aerobics instructor and has taught numerous fitness formats during the last 10 years in the Salem community, and like her fellow JoyRide instructors, she is also certified in adult CPR/AED and Standard First Aid.
Besides indoor cycling, she currently can be found teaching classes locally in yoga, resistance training, and Better Bones and Balance. Her basic exercise philosophy is that it should be both fun and challenging, and she will modify the workout to fit each individual’s fitness level. On the JoyRide Cycling Studio floor, after her recent certification as a Schwinn Indoor Cycling Instructor, expect the unexpected. She feels that keeping fit is a lifetime adventure.
In addition to her indoor fitness classes Mary likes to snowshoe, hike, bike, and is currently adding mushrooming to her list of outdoor activities. And as a side note, she hopes to add a bit of “green and yellow” balance to this otherwise “black and orange” establishment ;o) Note from the “Beaver Base” at JoyRide – No worries Mary, we welcome Ducks fans and even root for the Ducks, except on one day of the year!!
